Floating reed beds are deceptively simple — a buoyant raft, a coir matrix, native marginals planted into the matrix, and the whole thing tethered loosely to the bank.
What they do is less simple. Within a single growing season, a well-placed raft can measurably improve clarity, reduce nutrient loading, and provide spawning cover for juvenile fish that wasn't previously available.
The lesson, as always, is patience. The water tells you when the planting has taken — usually about the time you stop checking.
